Oh thanks! That would have shaved a good hour off, was sure I’d got it working on Mac before but couldn’t remember what to do.
Going to try to do that and shelve a snapshot / vm for future use on a usb stick before I reclaim the disk space!
PS this worked like a charm, for others looking (and my own future reference!):
add a optical drive in the VM before powering it on (for example, add a Controller:SATA in the machine settings/storage setup then right click on it and ‘add optical drive’)
Start the VM and select from the virtualbox menu ‘Devices -> Insert Guest additions CD image’

Noticed post upgrade that sometimes when whipping through the presets it will display “CCCCCCCCCC” instead of the preset name, turn the encoder to the next preset and back and the proper name appears…
After several hours of jamming on my rack #30,31,32
Up/Dn Gliss and Sub Octave patches all stopped working suddenly.
As I increased the DRY to WET it would just be totally silent. I tried messing around with the other knobs and turning on and off the comb and delay but nothing. #29 and #33 worked fine. I didn’t go through all the others.
Powered my rack off and back on and it started working again.
I have always wondered - when you select different preset ramps, one click just seems to adjust a single tap by like … 1 value or something. What’s that all about?
Also would there ever be the chance of extra shapes? Certainly for panning I like to something go 1L, 1R, 2L, 2R, 3L, 3R… things like that Or 16L, 16R, 16L, 16R etc… it would be so cool if you could store your own user shapes!
Hi - I guess it’s Intellijel device update day here!
I updated the Rainmaker display to 1.09. Are there written instructions somewhere for updating the FPGA to 143 using a PC? The zip file only contains a .jic file that I’m not sure what to do with.
does anyone else notice presets being pretty different after the update? my user made ones particularly.
their modulation on the new setting seems much stronger than before, but when i reduce the modulation to low settings i feel like i just cant coax the same magic out of my presets.
was anything else changed that would affect the sound other than the modulation depth?
I’m on 1.07.
Have tweaked quite many presets and was considering if doing this update.
Is it suggested?
How this manages all the existing user presets?
Many thanks
I acquired a Rainmaker a few months ago and it’s on firmware 1.02
What I’m about to attempt is scaring me to death!
What’s the chances of me bricking it?
I also have the Shape shifter…
I’m hoping the gods aren’t in a funny mood tonight.
I think I might be better off getting the kids to do this…
@werp I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Rainmaker brick from doing the firmware update wrong. If you need help please reach out to support@intellijel.com
In your case because you have both a Windows and Mac computer this should make your life easier. I would recommend using Windows to update the FPGA to version 143, then use the Mac to update the display to 1.09. No drivers are required on the Mac side.
thanks Scott, I appreciate your reply. Our power dropped out four times last night. Just as I was about to start writing ‘successfully updated an fpga thing’ into my curriculum vitae.
I took the hint and went to bed.
I shall wait until one of the kids rocks up for a visit. I’ve burned through enough bravery already this month
A few weeks ago I finally got myself a Rainmaker and really love the user interface, well done!
I have a question/request for the comb section though… Wouldn’t it be possible to add feedforward combfilters? And further even using them in combination with the fb combs to create a “multitap” allpass filter? I could imagine that this would add a lot of sonic possibilities without the need of more “processing power”, as the basic structure should already allow that somehow… This would really be a huge update, is this something you would consider?
