1U modules wishlist

A few modules here kinda meet your description…

Apologies if this has already been mentioned…

I’d really love, essentially, a 1U envelope follower with the added bonus of a pitch tracker:

  • Input (maybe, as mentioned above, with drive/saturation past 9pm?)
  • Envelope follower with threshold / rate
  • Gate or trigger output (based on the same threshold as above)
  • Monophonic pitch tracker with 1v/oct output to drive, say, an oscillator
  • Signal output

The only other modules with monophonic pitch tracking capabilities like that are I think the disting (nothing against the disting, but I don’t like how fiddly the little screen is), I know Analogue Systems makes one, Erica synths has one listed as “in development” on Modular Grid, and perhaps a Doepfer module?

It’s one of the features on the MS-20 that isn’t super readily replicable in eurorack, and it seems like a pretty big missed opportunity for processing vocals, turning guitars or wind instruments into synth machines, external monophonic synths…etc. It’d fit right into the 1U ethos - slap one next to the external input and process away!

I agree. This would be great

Pitch tracking is easy to implement poorly (the MS-20 circuit is very simple) but difficult to do well. It also has many different use cases one needs to address when you consider all the different classes of pitch sources that exist. For this reason it is probably best suited for a DSP based solution but then that takes some more serious development.

Coincidently I was actually studying this exact section of the MS-20 you refer to over the weekend and was wondering about at least some parts being a nice a good candidate for 1U.

That makes a lot of sense, funny timing!

I wonder how “good” the pitch tracker would need to be. Totally get the rationale for wanting to make it work well across many sources, but in some ways, a pitch tracker designed for one monophonic source (eg guitar) might be more interesting when you send unintended signals through it to see how the circuit behaves, or doesn’t. I know some of the broken sounds you get by sending voice through the ms-20 circuit are in some way even more desirable than a “perfect” tracker!

This is great, but it definitely needs a knob to adjust the curve type of the crossfader, plus cv over crossfader position.

Some EQ/tone shaping would be great. Not a lot in euro. Maybe a single tilt knob or a couple knobs and a switch…one for freq, another for Q, and the switch for freq range…and chaining in parallel.

Agreed, EQ (parametric) is seriously underrepresented in Eurorack, not sure why, anyone have any idea? I find that with complex patching, wild frequencies are prone to popping up and I enjoy having EQ on hand to tame them. I’m looking to pick up MI Shelves, maybe even two of them.

I think the filter is technically the sculpting part of a system and an external mixer more so…but now that there’s submixes going on it would be great to have some more shaping.

Would anyone be interested in a 1U Stereo Compressor?

For sure. Pumping/sidechaining hasn’t been a part of my sound but melding things with some compression before hitting my stereo master outs might be nice!

Adding Turing Machine capabilities to (a new version of) Noise Tools would be awesome. Just a locking function of the last steps and changeable steps length between 1 and 16/32.

I’m not aware of anybody making adat i/o for eurorack apart from expert sleepers. Right now I use a couple of stereo 1u outs. I’d LOVE an 1u adat i/o module in the format of the octalink.

Even better if it were capable of doing 96kHz mux’ed ADAT.

A super basic “mutes” 1U

I agree 100%

Slew Duo 1U

Maybe there could be an option (switch similar to Duatt?) to toggle the second input to Decay instead of Attack.

One more for a 1U quantizer! µScale please!

I am looking to pair this with a 1U LPG and hoping one of the distributors I use will have some LPG’s in stock soon, thanks folks

I mainly use 1u for regular 4hp modules mounted on their side w an adapter plate. The PCB’s in Shifty are just too wide to fit the ID of the 1u channel. Shifty would be such a great module to retrofit to a 1u layout, if you moved it to a 3pcb layout it would be a little deeper but it would totally work. Kills me cause if the existing boards were just a few mm slimmer it totally would have fit in there on its side.
